Altered Roots Quartet plays jazz in a reggae style and reggae with a jazz sensibility. After making a name as I’ve Never Been To Brisbane, it added a member and became ARQ, just to keep people on their toes. All four mates have decades in the Bay Area music scene playing in bands including Dub Congress, MDC, Inka Inka, Finagle, Dub FX and others.
In their words:
We love reggae. We live, breathe, eat and sleep it. Burning Spear is the first thing most of us put on in the morning. Except when we put on Coltrane. Or Scofield. Or John Zorn. As a musician you play what you love. For us, that’s not as easy as just one type of music. Welcome to ARQ: jazz in a reggae style and reggae with a jazz sensibility.
